Sloppy Joes

Paleo Sloppy Joe

Remember Sloppy Joe day in elementary school? The questionable meat and texture, but delicious sweet sauce? Well this is the real deal, unquestionable, waaayy more tasty and way more healthy Paleo Sloppy Joes! Most Sloppy Joe’s include, Ketchup, Worcestershire Sauce, and even brown sugar… all non-Paleo ingredients because of they include lots of sugar and additives. I was determined to make a hardy and satisfying version without the yuckies. This was received great by all and was deemed to become a regular in the dinner rotation. It’s not difficult at all, but does require lots of spices so the ingredients list might look a bit overwhelming.. but don’t fret, you just throw it all together and voila!

You could eat this on a salad, with veggies, or on top of Paleo Bread!!! I made Paleo Bread for the first time yesterday and it was delish! I’ll be posting that recipe soon. Not an original recipe but one I found on a blog I read frequently.

>Serves 4-5
>Prep time 20
>Cook time 20-30
Ingredients
1.25lbs ground beef (I used 90%- 10%)
1/2 orange pepper
1/2 medium yellow onion
2 jalepenos
1 6ozcan tomato paste
8 whole peeled roma tomatoes (I used a 1lb can of whole peeled roma tomatoes and used all but 1 tomato)
1 1/2 tsp crushed garlic (or 4 finely chopped cloves)
1/4 tsp cloves (+ a shake)
1/4 tsp ground mustard (+ 1/4 tsp)
1/4 tsp ground cumin (+ 1/4 tsp)
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
3/4 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp smoked paprika (+ 1/2 tsp)
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp salt
cracked black pepper (be liberal)
1 tsp chili powder (+ 1/4 tsp)
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1. Using a large french or dutch oven, brown your meat on low for about 5 or so minutes.
2. While your meat is cooking, slice and dice your onion and pepper. Once your meat has produced some fatty juices (I used 90-10% lean), add in your onion, pepper, and garlic. Stir around and dice your jalapeรฑos.
3. Add in your salt, 1/4 tsp cumin, 1/4 tsp ground mustard, 1/4 tsp cloves, 1/2 tsp smoked paprika, and 1 tsp chili powder. Add your jalapeรฑos and stir. Your meat should be fully cooked by now.
4. Chop your peeled tomatoes and add those and your can of tomato paste. Stir and add the apple cider vinegar.
5. Add in the rest of your spices (3/4 tsp onion powder, 1/4 tsp chili powder, 1/2 tsp smoked paprika, 1 tsp garlic powder, a shake of cloves, 1/4 tsp ground mustard, 1/4 tsp ground cumin, and 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes. Add your cracked black pepper and taste. Adjust salt ratio if need be.
6. Put the lid on your pan and let simmer on low for a minimum of 20 minutes to let all of the flavors come together.
7. Eat up and be merry! Bon Appititeeeeee
